Movie Review "Escape From Planet Earth" (Cartoon)

Hey everyone,

I love taking my daughter to movies. I love seeing her get excited when the hero saves the day. Or watch her eyes grow larger and start screaming "Oh no! Oh no!" when the good guys are in peril. She has done really well with the last couple movies we have gone to see. She used to run around, bounce of seats, and go to the bathroom 6 times in an hour. Now she sits quietly, except for the "Oh no!" moments, and just has fun. Last night we had a Teacher's conference where the teacher told us that our daughter was one of the sweetest and most intelligent kids in the class. This made me smile, so I decided to treat her to a movie. I wanted to go see Dreamworks latest cartoon, "The Croods". Unfortunately it doesn't come out until Friday, so we went to see....

Escape From Planet Earth: (2013) - PG
Starring the vocal talents of Brendan Fraser, Rob Corddry, and Ricky Gervais.

Overview - Scortch (Fraser) is a hero! He has style, wit, and a desperate need to be the center of attention. He embarks on many terrifying missions across the galaxy. His brother works in Mission Control, and pretty much does all the work for him. One day a distress call comes from The Dark Planet (Earth). Against his brother's warnings, Scortch decides to go and save his distant alien brethren from the percieved evil clutches of the human race.

Review - I can already sense that most of you are starting to yawn, so I will make this brief. I took my daughter to see this, not because I wanted to see it, but because the movie I wanted to see wasn't playing. Plus I had already told her we were going to see a movie. This film was written by 4 guys. 2 of them previously brought us "Hoodwinked" and "Hoodwinked Too" (No, please PLEASE. Hold your applause :-/ ). One of the writers was responsible for "Despicable Me" and "Horton Hears A Who". A blockbuster, and a total flop. So, the big question on everyone's mind. Did this movie suck? Short answer, yes. Long(er) answer.....The relationship between the brothers shows a pretty typical family dynamic. One brother overshadows the other. One is jealous of the other's success, but doesn't realize that his brother is also jealous of him, yada yada yada. The jokes were similar to the effect you feel when you take your 3D glasses off in a 3D picture. Everything's just a little off. If you spend the extra money for "Escape From Planet Earth" in 3D, I will punch you in the left arm. I will choose a meaty spot, so as not to inflict real damage, but just enough to let you know you made a bad choice. ANYWAYS...The jokes are stereotypical, the voices are overdone, and the plot is under-thought. Is movie is what they call a "Cash Grab". Something they can churn out real quick with pretty colors that will make them a quick profit, so the director can cover this month's mortgage. To it's credit, I will say that this will be a good one to Redbox, and keep your kids entertained while you get some much needed house cleaning done. Seriously, you're house is a pig sty. How can you live with yourself?!?

Overall I give it a 1 1/2 out of 5. It has enough entertainment for the little ones to stop pulling your hair for an hour and 27 minutes, but it's fairly dull and lifeless. Not to mention the voices add absolutely nothing to the characters.

Hey! My first negative review. Look at me, I'm growing. If you have anything you want to hear me rant on, email me at entertaindave.blogspot.com and follow me on twitter @entertaindave
