Thought I'd try and tackle something that could upset a lot of people. "True Grit" is a remake of a movie starring John Wayne in 1969 (My brother!). I have heard many a film elitist claim that the 2010 remake is nowhere near as good as the original. Well, let's see what Dave has to say...
True Grit: (2010) - PG-13
Starring Jeff Bridges, Hailee Steinfield, and Matt Damon
Overview - Rooster Cogburn (Bridges) is a US Marshall who lives a bit too much in the bottle. But he's the best man-hunter in these parts. Little Mattie Ross (Steinfield) is reeling from the wrongful death of her father. She hires Mr. Cogburn to track down her father's killer, and decides to tag along. Buckle up, cuz it's go an be a bumpy ride.
Review - How does one begin to bring their own unique view to a movie that was nominated for a staggering 10 Academy Awards? By reminding the audience that I don't have a masters in Cinematography, or have half a clue what I'm doing concerning a score. I'm just a guy who likes other people to entertain me. With that, here we go. I'm not usually a "Westerns" guy. There have been a handful that I have enjoyed. "3:10 To Yuma", "Young Guns", "Tombestone" for example. However I don't care for some of the classics, like "The Good, The Bad, and the Ugly". Call me uneducated, but I can't stand watching a man stand and talk to another man for 25 minutes on a static shot, then sit down and talk to the same man for another 15 minutes. My brother in-law always says I won't like a movie if there are no explosions and the camera doesn't spin around. He's a jerk, but he knows me. :-) I will start it off by say I very much enjoyed "True Grit". Jeff Bridges catches a lot of flack because he seems to always take the lead in a lot of big movies. Well there's a reason. He knows what he's doing, and he can support a major film. In this one he is particularly funny, on top of showing us what a man, who is a bit of a vagabond, was like in that day and age. Though, I will warn you that he is VERY hard to understand. He talks like someone shoved 25 marshmallows in his mouth and then let a horse kick him in the teeth. That aside, he delivers his character flawlessly. Truthfully, the whole cast does a phenomenal job connecting you to the story. They put forth a performance that makes you feel like you are right there with them as they ride the trail, and drink themselves into a stupor. Steinfeld's character (Mattie Ross) is taking over and settling all of her father's affairs while she lines up the Marshall to hunt down the killer. Steinfield blew me away. In the movie she is around 12 years old, and she takes on men who are 30 years her senior. I have never seen her in anything before, so she was a fresh face to me. After this, I will support any role she takes on. Matt Damon shows up a bit into s film and plays a detective named LaBeouf. As amazing as Damon is, normally. I really wasn't impressed with his role in this film. I think just about any other notable actor could have taken the role and played it well. The cinematography in this one was incredible! The Cohen brothers know how to make movies, and they don't disappoint in this film. The scenery, still shots, and capture of emotion set this movie apart from a lot of it's predecessors.
I will give this one a 4 1/2 out of 5 because it's the best western I have seen, to date. I recommend it to anyone, and will watch it again.
Things to watch out for in to film...
- Surprisingly, to my joy, there are no sex scenes. No overuse of swears. And no nudity. Just sit back and enjoy.
